The Costa Rica Quilt Retreat

A quilting retreat in Costa Rica

Jennifer and Rita

Tropical paradise: beaches, volcanoes, exotic flora and fauna...and quilting! Who could ask for more?

Costa Rica has long been known as a lush tropical destination for nature lovers from around the world, with white and black sand beaches, active and dormant volcanoes, lush rain and cloud forest, and countless bird, butterfly and animal species.

And now there are quilters too!

Join us for our five-day program of quilting, sightseeing and relaxation at Villa Rita, or contact us to set up a custom retreat that meets the needs of your group or guild. Interested? All you need are two quilting friends; our minimum group size is just three guests! Contact us today to ask about availability.

Your hosts, Rita and Jennifer, are both experienced quilters from the United States who have settled in Costa Rica. Our goal is to provide a friendly, relaxing atmosphere, quality quilting time and an introduction to Costa Rica's natural beauty.

Thanks for a wonderful Costa Rica experience. The love of quilting brought us here but we leave with a love of Costa Rica too. What a great mixture of quilting & sightseeing. Very fun to see how people live here. Thanks for pampering us! I hope we meet again!
- Marilyn from MN

All skill levels are welcome. Beginners, even those who have never sewn or quilted before, are invited to learn the basics while making a wall hanging or throw pillows from one of our original designs. Experienced quilters will appreciate the opportunity to work at their own pace with as much or as little guidance as desired. Our original block designs each reflect an aspect of Costa Rica's natural or cultural heritage. With nine designs to choose from, each participant has the opportunity to select and lay out the blocks in her (or his!) own way.

Although there have always been individual quilters in Costa Rica, the craft is just beginning to enjoy the popularity we know it deserves! There have been several quilt shows, a guild was created in early 2006, and a very few quilt shops have appeared in recent years. Fortunately, one of them is on-site at Villa Rita! Your retreat project, including pattern and fabric, is included in the package price, but Ulloa Quilts is always available if you would like to experiment with different fabric choices, pick up some extra notions, or want to browse the patterns and quilts for inspiration. And, time permitting, Jennifer usually brings along a basket of hand-dyed fat quarters as an added temptation!

One of the best weeks of my life! You girls are absolutely wonderful! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
- Lula from AR

The package price is nearly all-inclusive, covering food, lodging, all ground transportation, tours, quilting workshops, pattern and materials for the retreat project. You may want to bring spending money for an optional massage and/or facial when we visit the hot springs. For meals and evenings at Villa Rita, wine and beer are available for one dollar each. And of course there will be plenty of souvenir and gift shopping opportunities! Participants or group leaders are responsible for arranging their own flights to and from Costa Rica.
